Synopsis

This course introduces the student to the intricate relationship of Government and Business and Society in the modern economy. Emphasis is on the concepts, principles and policy dimensions as well as regulatory aspects of government intervention, promotion of business, and impact on society, in a constantly changing domestic and global marketplace. The topics include historical perspectives of public and private sector relations, as well as key concepts/frameworks, and issues that govern business-government relations and their impact on markets and society. Using case studies and other platforms, issues in business/government relations, stakeholder interests, regulation, ethics, corporate and public governance, as well as globalization and competition are examined, debated, and discussed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain business relation with regards to the interaction and workings between government and business.
  • Analyze the paradoxes involved in the complex relationship between public and private sectors – both domestic and international.
  • Discuss the processes of government-business relationships and decision making, and identify the person/organisation involved or affected by those decisions.
  • Describe problems in public-private sector policy-making, stakeholders’ interests, business ethics, business-government communication, crisis management, and corporate strategy.
