Synopsis

Public services are a highly salient feature of modern society. The management of the public sector is arguably significantly more challenging than in the private sector, not least because of the intensity of the scrutiny by multiple and varied stakeholders. Moreover, in the last twenty years or so, public management has undergone a transformation by importing key developments and applications from commercial organisations. The module is designed to introduce students to the organisation and management of public services. An introduction to the public sector and the contemporary issues that affect its working environment are essential to fully understanding the way it operates. This module also examines the extent and varied nature of Public Sector operations, and the democratic framework in which they exist.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe contemporary changes in public sector management, drawing on comparative studies.
  • Analyse the relationship between the democratic process and public policy and management.
  • Describe the role management in of Local Government, Central Government and the role of the Public Sector.
  • Use multi-disciplinary concepts, theories and methods to the analysis of the tasks and issues in public sector management.
