Synopsis

This course introduces students to the basic concepts, theories and practices in international relations (IR) and diplomacy. The course main goal is to help students better understand the underlying dynamics that shape the relationships among states and between states and non-state actors in international relations and the factors and institutions that influence the process. It also aims to help students develop their analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills in the field.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss the major theoretical traditions in the understanding and study of international relations.
  • Describe the major actors and processes that constitute and define inter-state relations in the international system.
  • Analyse the role of power and use of force in international relations from the perspective of the major theoretical traditions.
  • Analyse the role of diplomacy in constructing cooperative relationships between states in the international system.
