Synopsis

This course will focus on the transformative process through which the nations of contemporary Southeast Asia have confronted political crises and instability and the various levels of success with which they have attempted to implement comprehensive programs of reform. The course will provide historical as well as contemporary issues on Southeast Asian politics. It will also deal with regional organisations that are of relevance to Southeast Asian countries and well as deal with international relations issues confronting Southeast Asian nations. As far as possible the course will cover ASEAN countries but there will in depth study on major states in ASEAN mainly Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the historical background to politics in Southeast Asia.
  • discuss themes on colonization and decolonization of Southeast Asian countries.
  • Study contemporary issues of Southeast Asian politics.
  • critically examine regional politics and issues specifically ASEAN.
