This module examines development processes and policies from a political economy perspective. The syllabus is designed to provide a basic ‘literacy’ in theory of political economy and policy relevant to the study and practice of development.

• Identify the legacy of historical institutions on development and growth.
• Review competing schools of thought on why some countries become rich while many others remain poor.
• Examine the alternative diagnoses that these schools provide for underdevelopment.
• Distinguish mechanisms by which investment, institutions, and governance interact to shape development in a globalizing world.
