An advanced exploration of regulatory decision-making, focusing on the justifications and methods for implementing regulation; how policy, politics and law impact on regulatory decisions; case studies of regulatory programs, their successes and failures.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the economic and non economic goals of regulation.
  • Describe the political forces influencing regulatory outcomes.
  • Discuss the regulatory life cycle which involves market failure, regulation, regulatory failure, regulatory reform and deregulation.
  • Provide justification for regulation for spill over cost and welfare programs.
  • Critically appraise the structure of the public sector and regulatory matrix.
