This course essentially guides students to understand the philosophy of science, theory construction, theory testing, and causality. With appropriate epistemological grounding, the students should be aware of techniques and issues which strengthen or threaten the validity of studies. This foundation would allow students to critically appreciate the philosophical approaches of scientific research, process of problems formation and formulation, as well as the research paradigms of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method approaches.

• Recognise the feasibility of applying different philosophical perspectives, research designs, and methods of inquiry to the chosen research topic
• Relate relevant theoretical and conceptual frameworks in different research settings
• Apply suitable theories to choose appropriate sampling techniques, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques for different research purposes
