This subject aims to develop participants' understanding of the basic terminologies and the relevance of linguistics in relation to ESL applications. It covers areas on the nature of language, essential elements of linguistics, language acquisition and learning, English morphology and word formation, syntax and grammatical elements and the various branches of linguistics.

• Describe the key concepts of linguistics
• Explain the implications of linguistics to language acquisition and learning
• Explain the implications of the concepts of sociolinguistics and psychological variables in second language learning
• Review the aspects of errors commonly done by second language speakers through simple discourse analysis
