Synopsis

This course essentially guides students to understand the philosophy of science, theory construction, theory testing, and causality. With appropriate epistemological grounding, the students should be aware of techniques and issues which strengthen or threaten the validity of studies. This foundation would allow students to critically appreciate the philosophical approaches of scientific research, process of problems formation and formulation, as well as the research paradigms of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method approaches.

Learning Outcomes

  • Distinguish and recognise the feasibility of applying different philosophical perspectives, research designs, and methods of inquiry to the chosen research topic.
  • Relate to relevant theoretical and conceptual framework in different research settings.
  • Identify and apply the use of appropriate sampling techniques, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques for different research purposes.
  • Share and communicate ethical issues in research impacting the research community and society.
