Synopsis

This course presents the field with all its disciplinary, epistemological, theoretical, methodological, and content variation, while also honouring the field’s roots in applied linguistics. The aim of the course is to give the student a thorough introduction to theory-building in the field of language policy and language planning. With a special focus on language planning in ESL context, the course will give the students insights into theories on language maintenance, language shift and language revitalisation. In addition, language ideologies and attitudes are studied through language-related press debates.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain Key terms, central theories and approaches in language policy and planning research
  • Debate on how Ideologies and the ways in which they influence the implementation of language-political decisions in society
  • Identify Language Policy Planning, process and Implementation in Malaysia and in selected countries
  • Prepare a mini­case study of a language policy, planning and implementation
