Synopsis

The Foundations of Counseling course is designed to provide students with sufficient knowledge to begin the Counseling program. The course provides an overview of the professional, ethical, legal, theoretical, and practical aspects of professional counseling. The historical development of the counseling profession is explored, as well as the roles, responsibilities, and training required for a variety of counseling specialties. Students are asked to examine personal motives for entering the counseling field and to explore professional goals.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define guidance, counselling, and psychotherapy; the theoretical background to counselling, & models for counselling approach; 
  • Explain counsellor s’ competence, orienting client to counselling & standards as well as ethics in counselling
  • Decribe counselor responsibilities to clients; one-self, colleagues & community
