Synopsis

This course is to offer students hands-on experience in doing independent research. The project course gives the student an opportunity to apply in an independent fashion many of the skills developed over the courses of their study. The project is a vehicle for both integrating theory and practice and for incorporating novel or creative elements into a substantive piece of work. Students are expected to produce a written research report which includes problem statements, research questions and objectives, literature reviews, discussions about research methods and data collection, data analysis and findings, discussion, and conclusion. Students are also expected to produce a presentation of their research and findings. Students will be assigned a supervisor to provide them with guidance and support throughout the research process

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify a research problem – and corresponding research objectives – which are relevant to the field of study. Prepare a literature review based on a critical reading of the relevant literature in the chosen area of study
  • Use a research methodology which is relevant to the research problem at hand, factoring in potential ethical and social considerations
  • Interpret data, which has been identified and/or collected based on the relevance to the research problem at hand
  • Prepare a research report and presentation, discussing the findings of the research with regards to its limitations, as well as its ethical and social implication
