Synopsis

Islamic finance and banking have become important element in the modern financial system. This course attempts to familiarize students with the principles of Syariah and the various products and services offered by Islamic banking. It covers topics on deposit services, Retail or Consumer Banking, Corporate banking or Trade Finance, Treasury or Money Market Investment Products and other new products and services such as stock broking services, funds transfer and administration of property, estates and wills. Their underlying contracts such as wadiah wad dhamma, mudaraba, Joala, musyarakah mutanaqisah, ijara, bai’ al inah, tawarruq, qard al hasan, salam, istijrar, kafala, musyarakah, istisna, bai al-dayn, ujr, bai bithaman Ajil for the various forms of deposits, housing and property finance, hire purchase, share financing, working capital financing, project financing, letter of credit, venture capital, financing syndication, letter of credit and guarantee, leasing, export and import finance, Islamic bonds, government investment issues will be discussed in this course. Students will also be able to assess the latest trends and developments in Islamic banking products and services, the market acceptance of new products, and the positive and negative impact of innovations. This course will also discuss current issues in the Islamic banking system.
