This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the main ideas of governance from the perspective of political philosophy. Since governance is one of the essentially contested concepts within the field of political science, students will be introduced to the subject through the lens of the canonical thinkers – from the ancient Greeks up to modern day thinkers – that have tackled the issue throughout the history of political thought. This approach will give students a solid foundation in understanding the key concepts defining governance, as well as giving them the necessary analytical tools for comparing and contrasting the merits of the various approaches to governance discussed in modern political discourse.

• Explain the contributions of major political theorists.
• Compare how different political thinkers make sense of the political world.
• Describe real problems in politics and leadership from the perspective of the theories and concepts presented in the course.
